Vocation and age

To those of us who have the resources and freedom to make meaningful choices about our careers (an incredibly fortunate minority, to be sure), thinking of our careers in terms of vocation is hugely important, for a whole host of reasons.

But one of those reasons is that we’re working longer. Someday, if you haven’t already, you will find yourself at the age of 65 (a pathetically arbitrary number, but alas) and you may continue working. You might have to, or you may want to, or you might simply not know what to do with yourself without continuing and thus the decision gets made for you.

Vocation–doing work that you are passionate about AND good at–makes working past the age of 65 sort of a non-factor doesn’t it? And if you have the choice, isn’t that a much better answer than simply working a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ job for a paycheck or a title or prestige or any other reason?
