Here is a rather depressing look at the extent to which doctors who prescribed Salix Pharmaceuticals’ drugs received illegal kickbacks. This is also known as bribery, and unfortunately is an integral characteristic of the middle of the “pharmaceutical sales” and “medical care” Venn diagram.
The problem is not restricted to the former Raleigh-based pharma company, or to pharma companies in general, but is simply the logical result of less than ideal incentive structures. And while I could (and maybe will) write several posts about eerily similar sorts of transgressions within the financial services industry, I have a different question for you to consider today:
What sorts of incentives have you set up for yourself?
We all have them. Goals, dreams, debt, relationships, assets, priorities–all of these come with their own incentive structure.
Make yours one that rewards creativity and humanity, and then live freely in it.
