Stop fooling yourself into believing that what you need or what your family needs from you is the big gift, the expensive vacation, the lavish surprise.
Concentrate on the little things–the random phone calls and texts and notes, the unexpected treats from the coffee shop, the spontaneous date night at Five Guys, the time outside, showing up when you said you would. When you get that down pat, then come talk to me about the big things, because then those things could actually be meaningful.
But if you don’t get the little things down, the big stuff is just fluff. Like those terrible cupcakes with three inches of icing and a tiny little dry cake underneath. No one wants that.
