I needed a part for the Yakima racks I just bought for my wife’s car. It was a simple, tiny bolt, and Yakima was selling it on its website for $2, but charging $15 for the shipping option I needed to get it on time.
I went to Great Outdoor Provision Company, asked if they had any of these laying around, they did, and I walked out of the store with a used bolt for free.
The moral of this story is that sometimes you just need to ask. The downside to “no” is almost always less than the upside to “yes.”
