Being proud of thrift

I was at a formal banquet a couple weeks ago, and at one point during a transition in the program the gentleman I was sitting next to turned to me suddenly and pointed to his shoes (a pair of black cap-toe oxfords.)

“I hesitate to tell you this,” he said, “but I have a feeling you’ll get where I’m coming from. I bought this pair of shoes from an Allen Edmonds store in the late 1980s. Not many people understand the value of buying high-quality goods and using them for many years, but it’s an important practice.”

Having just bought a slightly used pair of Allen Edmonds penny loafers on eBay for $50, I couldn’t help but share with him my hearty agreement, and we had a wonderful conversation about all kinds of things afterward.

Don’t be arrogant or weird about your thrift, but have fun with it! Tell others about the bargains that have enabled your money to go farther doing awesome things with people you love!
