The great weight

A really weird thing about money is that no amount of it can shield you from that great weight, that oppressive, worrying weight that can hit you like a 2×4 at random moments in the day or night. What is that weight? I don’t know. Yours is certainly different than mine, though we may have some overlap here and there.

Indeed, the great lie of financial wealth is that it provides you with a get out of jail free card for this weight, that it is the hot-air balloon you jump in to skip the valley of sorrows and frets.

Maybe this is why artificial poverty is a thing. Maybe, in finding ourselves tumbling down that valley from time to time, instead of realizing we’ve been duped by this great lie, we simply lie to ourselves again and say that we just needed more wealth to hop into the balloon to begin with.

The valley is real. The balloon and the get out of jail free card are not.
