Legacy is overrated

I’m convinced that what we do today exists on and will impact an eternal story arc, which is precisely why “legacy” as it’s often discussed is not worth thinking much about.

If money will be worth giving away from your estate, give it away now. Don’t wait until you sell your business to be radically generous with your employees. Your children will not be able to make memories with your money after you die. Your name is worth more to a close set of friends than it could ever be to a building.

Today and eternity are two sides of the same coin of time. Today’s means are eternity’s ends. Do something today that matters for eternity, knowing that the eternal makes the minutiae of today worth living well.

Two decades from now is fine, and I suppose it’s okay to give that sort of “legacy” a small bit of thought and energy, but leave the best part for today and the eternal.
