Somewhere in the chasm between apathy and obsession there is simply “paying attention.” This is where you want to be when it comes to your money. You can call it budgeting, or you can make up your own word and call it that, but whatever you do, just pay attention.
At various points in your life it will feel like obsession or apathy are better options (often because they are sold to us as such), but resist the temptation to head toward those extremes. Obsession will lead to analysis paralysis, overconfidence, and time wasted. Apathy will lead to lost opportunity, disorganization, and mismanagement.
Paying attention is a slower-paced way to take necessary action without it consuming your life. It’s a better way.
