Prosperity gospel re-do

What if less really is more? What if those of us who are rich would become richer in the truest of senses by becoming poorer? This is the model of Jesus.

Too often just about the only thing I hear in wealthy Christian circles on the topic of generous, sacrificial giving is something like: “You’ll be amazed at how God blesses and grows your business beyond your wildest dreams when you start to trust him and tithe!!” Like the only way you can sell tickets to your generosity conference is by promising attendees that the way God “blesses” generosity is by making rich people richer.

But listen carefully: Wealth and blessing are not synonyms.

Our imaginations need expansion so that we can start to see prosperity and blessing and abundance not through a one-dimensional lens of material possession, but instead through the infinite lens of love and grace and mercy: The infinite lens of Jesus who says “my yoke is easy and my burden light.”

For the poor, that lens of prosperity may very well need to include economic provision, and for the rich, that same lens may include economic sacrifice. And here’s the thing: in each direction it is all a gift.
