Time is your ally

In his wonderful primer on Girardian thought, Luke Burgis draws a lovely and useful distinction between “thin” desires–transient and often unhealthfully mimicking–and “thick” desires–those which endure and are ultimately good.

There are many ways to go about cultivating thick desires, but it strikes me that time is one of our most powerful weapons in this pursuit. Slowing down, living life and making decisions at a more molasses-like pace will do wonders for us. And why? Because in the additional space afforded to us by slowing down, we begin to see that our desires catered to by various “Buy It Now” buttons are like so much chaff blowing in the wind. They are thin desires.

Thick desires endure. They are substantial across time. Waiting is good.
