Money pockets

Money is fungible: a dollar in your right pocket is the same as a dollar in your left pocket.

But of course it’s not that simple: The money you receive from your job feels different–it IS different–than money you receive as an inheritance from your mom. Money you give away is different than money you gamble which is different than money you spend paying for you kids’ education.

So money is meaningful: a dollar in your right pocket may have the same monetary content as a dollar in your left pocket, but an entirely different significance content.

Both the fungibility and meaning content of the dollars in your right and left pockets are important. The hard part is synthesizing them in your particular circumstances in satisfying and healthy ways.
