There’s this great quote, in a recent profile of former Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin: “In finance, there are gorillas, there are apes, and there are chimps….Chimps want to be apes, and apes want to be gorillas.” And even the gorillas want to know who’s on top!
The pursuit of power and wealth is dehumanizing, and while it may be worse at the so-called upper echelons, those of us further down are by no means immune. We can be so obsessed with obtaining a seat at the table that we forget about the table in the dining room of our own home where the seat that’s already ours sits empty.
