Live with your eyes up

If I’m watching a basketball game, whether at the local YMCA or on television, I can usually pick out the best couple of players on the court within a few possessions. And no matter what position they play or what size they are, they all share one characteristic: they play with their eyes up.

That is, the best players have the best vision. They are keenly aware of where the ball is, where their teammates are, where their opponents are, where the basket is. And you can see this vision in the way these players move, both with and without the ball.

The same is true, I think, with people and money. People who are myopic, who are consumed only with themselves, will inevitably make money decisions that reflect that reality. And it’s not a pleasant one.

But those with their eyes up? They’re the best players on the court.
